What is a Food Chain?

A food chain is a diagram that represents the flow of energy between living things when they are consumed by other living things. The sun provides the initial source of energy, and producers, such as plants, then use the energy from the sun together with water and carbon dioxide to make their own food. Animals are known as consumers, because they eat plants or other animals. Some animals eat only plants, these are called herbivores, and include rabbits, mice, cows, pigs and chickens. Animals that consume other animals are called carnivores, and they include wolves, lions, foxes and hawks. Carnivores are above herbivores in the food chain. All living things are part of a food chain, however, many living organisms can be part of more than one food chain. A series of interconnected food chains showing energy flow within an ecosystem is known as a food web.
